Involvement in local Chambers of Commerce

I would like to encourage everyone to begin researching local Chambers of Commerce in your area. Some questions to consider... What committees are available? What are the costs associated with membership? What networking opportunities exist? How often are events held and at what times? Look at the quality of events as well...is it more of a wine-and-cheese party than a networking event? It is important that your time is spent on quality events that will allow you to connect with leaders and those who can influence future business decisions. Which committees will give you an inside look at which businesses are expanding?

I recently got on board with the Greater Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. The current committee that I will soon become involved in focuses on human resources, business retention, and expansion; i.e. which businesses are doing well, which ones are not, factors causing increases/decreases in business and employees, what current Tampa Bay business needs are, and etc. Though I will be surveying the community on behalf on the Chamber, I will also be making connections with high profile business owners and department heads.

Here is a description of this specific committee.

LOCAL BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION SUBCOMMITTEE
Works with locally-based companies to provide resources in order to maintain their operation/presence at the current location or within Hillsborough County. Will conduct company visit and surveys to better understand company issues.

How well networked are you today? How can you improve your community involvement in your area? Chambers can be a great resource; be selective and ask questions!
